We recently chatted with Cody Longo, who stars in Bring It On: Fight to the Finish, the fifth installment of the Bring It On series coming out on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow, September 1. Find out what the former Abercrombie model thought about playing Christina Milian’s love interest in the movie and why we think he’s about to give Zac Efron, the hailing onscreen b-ball champ, a run for his money!
EG: So tell us what makes Fight to the Finish different from the last four movies.
Cody Longo: This one brings a little more diversity into the franchise with the Latino vibe, and Christina Milian really tears it up. I play a character named Evan that Lina [Christina’s character] ends up taking a liking to when she moves to Malibu. Evan is kind of the mediator in the movie—he’s more down-to-earth and doesn’t get caught up in all the superficial nonsense. He concentrates on his basketball and his music, and he’s just doing what he wants to do and living his life, which is also what Lina’s doing—I think that’s why they appeal to each other.
EG: As a guy, what interested you to star a cheerleading movie?
CL: I thought it would be a good stepping stone into the teeny bopper world, and it’s a cool franchise. There are a lot of closeted Bring It On fans out there who don’t want to admit it, but these movies are fun. Before I got the offer, I made sure I wasn’t going to be playing a cheerleader. I ended up being a basketball player who happens to be the lead boy, and I was able to make him a little bit different than the stereotypical hot guy in Bring It On.
EG: What makes Evan different than the “stereotypical hot guy”?
CL: He has more layers to him, and he’s kind of a shy character. I made him a little dorky and awkward at times to make it more appealing to everybody because I didn’t want to just be a piece of meat out there.
EG: What was it like playing the love interest of Christina Milian’s character?
CL: It was fun! I think our chemistry—right off the bat, even when we were doing the chemistry reads for the director—kind of just snapped. What she brought to Lina and what I brought to Evan just connected right away, and it made it easy to portray that in the film and show that chemistry on camera.
EG: So were you into the cheerleaders when you were in high school?
CL: I’ve always been into a girl with some mystery about her, who has something that keeps me going and who is able to keep up with me. I was always into girls who were artistic or played music and were really passionate about something—because that always makes a person more interesting
EG: Did Fight to the Finish change your outlook on cheerleading at all?
CL: It totally did. I really drew an appreciation for cheerleaders in general and especially male cheerleaders. They’re incredible athletes dong crazy stuff. My jaw just drops the whole time because of the stunts these people pull off.
EG: Do you dance in the movie?
CL: In the movie I had to dance some salsa.
EG: On a scale from 1 to 10, how would you rate your dance moves?
CL: I’m an eleven, of course! I danced in school. We had a hip hop team at my high school in Colorado, so I have a little bit of rhythm from that.
EG: What’s your favorite thing to do on a first date?
CL: If I’m trying to keep it light, I’ll take her to a quick bite to eat and then go hang out with friends to see if I actually like her. But if I know I’m into her and it’s the first real date, I like to do a nice dinner and really go all out. I’m a total romantic. I’ll take her to the beach at night, which is one of my favorite things to do. Nothing too sensual or crazy, just relax and listen to the waves.
EG: What’s up next for you?
CL: I’m dabbling in a TV show called Make It or Break It, in which my girlfriend is actually one of the leads. We didn’t plan it at all and it’s fun, but we just have to try to keep our own privacy because we’re together a lot, and we don’t want to get sick of each other. When we get on set it’s very professional, very business, and the moment we’re off we can be boyfriend and girlfriend again.
