Are you a Gossip Girl fan? If you are (and, really, who isn't?), I suggest you go to the nearest bookstore and pick up The Interns: Fashionistas immediately. Especially with the TV series on hiatus during the summer, the book is the perfect way to get your fill of backstabbing stylish teen girls and catty remarks. The Interns: Fashionistas is all that (it even has its own version of a "GG," signing off the blog as, "Your faithful Fashionista")—and definitely much, much more.
The Interns: Fashionistas takes place in the offices of one of the most prestigious fashion magazines in the country, Couture, rather than at a prep school on the Upper East Side, and—you guessed it—all the characters are interns. Each chapter is narrated by one of the four main female characters, who have very different styles and personalities.
What I enjoyed most about The Interns: Fashionistas was that, as unrealistic as some of the situations were (a male socialite living in New York City proper in his twenties going out with a high school student from Ohio?!?), I loved the way that the book depicted New York. As a student living in Manhattan, this was probably one of the main reasons to why I found the book appealing (I basically read it in just one sitting!); it’s a pretty accurate glimpse into the life of any young person trying to make it in the Big Apple. From getting fake IDs to shopping at the beloved Sigerson Morrison outpost in NoLIta to trekking out to Williamsburg, I could relate to what author Chloe Walsh wrote about. And even though I may be living in New York right now, I think the book is completely accessible to any girl who has ever even flipped through a copy of ELLE magazine. The constant label name-dropping is also another crucial factor to the novel's couture credibility—who can’t imagine a crisp Yves Saint Laurent power suit or a beautiful blue Elie Saab gown?
Not to give anything away, but the novel ends just as scandalous bits and pieces of the plot come together. I’m aching to find out what happens next—which basically means that I’m hooked! Luckily, the second book comes out later this summer, so I won't have to wait for long. Although at times it’s a little lowbrow, I still definitely recommend The Interns: FAshionistas to anyone who's interested in the fashion and magazine industry—and a whole lot of drama.
xoxo,
Your Faithful YC
