The first time I heard Katy Perry, I hated her. I’m not sure if it was the song (“UR So Gay”), her voice, or the Perez endorsement, but something about her rubbed me the wrong way. I crossed my fingers that she wouldn’t get big and figured that I’d never listen to her again…until I was invited to check her out at her first New York gig last week. Am I glad that I begrudgingly went—Katy Perry is for real. And there’s no doubt in my mind that she’s going to be huge. Here’s why:
1) She’s got a killer voice. The girl can seriously sing—she’s no Ashlee Simpson, that’s for sure.

2) She actually plays an instrument. I love a chick who can shred a guitar. Katy Perry may not have any wild guitar solos (although she does have a touring band, which consists of Pete Wentz look-alikes in matching lilac ties), but she can strum along with the best of them.
3) She’s a style icon. Katy Perry does ‘50s with an ‘80s twist—think cherry red halter tops with pink pumps, or high waisted mint green shorts with heart pockets. Check out her video tour of the best vintage stores in L.A.—she’s got a serious shopping eye.

4) She’s cute as a button. I spent half the show wondering how often Katy Perry gets called Zooey Deschanel—with her dark hair and blunt bangs, she could be the indie actress’s twin. Katy Perry’s also incredibly charming onstage—so many of her songs are tongue-in-cheek, and she plays it off well live. Think lots of exaggerated expressions, questions to the audience, even letting the crazy kids in the first row sing the entire chorus to her single, the aforementioned “UR So Gay.” Call it charisma, stage presence, or wit, but she definitely knows how to capture a crowd’s attention.
5) Her songs are really, really catchy. Now I understand why L.A. scenesters, Perez Hilton, and even Madonna have gone public with their love for Katy Perry—her songs are undeniably catchy. Her first big hit is “UR So Gay,” but I’m guessing that either “I Kissed a Girl” or “One of the Boys” (also the title of her album, coming out in June) will be her first real mega hit.

Because whether you like it or not, Katy Perry is going to be a mega hit. She will probably also deal with a ton of backlash, from the fans-turned-haters who “heard her first” and think that she’s sold out or are sick of hearing her single on the radio. All I have to say to them is that I was once a hater, but I’ve seen the light; she deserves the attention and, honestly, wouldn’t you prefer a musician with actual talent and style making it big than another pre-packaged pop hit?—Rebecca

First time I heard the beat of "I Kissed A Girl" I liked it. It took me a few times before realizing there's underlying meaning from the lyrics. I got interested, most esp. after seeing the video. Found out more about her, and now she's my idol! I appreciate her talent and the way she has expressed her life through her songs. I wish Katy will continue to shine! I love you girl!

I Kissed A Girl - Writer(s) -
Katy Perry,
Dr. Luke,
Max Martin,
Cathy Dennis
So I am supposed to believe she is "real" when there's FOUR writers on this song, and one of them is none other than Britney's "Hit Me Baby One More Time" song and sound designer Max Martin?
Come on! She's just as fake as Britney or Pink or anyone sporting Martin as a "co-writer" (like I believe that any of these pop singers actually write anything, though they get a credit to make it look like they do!). They all fish from the same pond of writers, anyone ever notice?
