Why do we love 23-year-old singer Katy Perry? Um, because she can wear rainbow leopard print nails, a leopard print dress, and tiger print sunglasses together and not look crazy. Ok, not in a bad way. Animal print is quite ubiquitous this week in Austin, but I can safely say I haven't seen it done as tastefully. Even on myself. -Holly
Cutie Katy Perry turns it out
Katy gets her manicures animal style. Soooooo L.A.
ELLEgirl: Do you see yourself as a pop act?
Katy: It's funny, I feel inbetween. I'm not like hipster cool, and I'm not like pop star lame. I have the haters who come to the shows that are hipster cool, but I do my job and I turn those frowns upside down. I may have a major label backing, but I've put a lot of work into it. It's not like my dad was my manager. I'm proud to be purely pop, because I think that kind of music needs to change.
ELLEgirl: It seems like there is a female singer songwriter explosion right now.
Katy Perry: There is! And it just kind of happened naturally. It's not like we get together and have an est-fest.
ELLEgirl: How'd you get started?
Katy: I've been performing since I was sixteen. I grew up singing in church, I sang "Oh Happy Day" 100,000 times. I grew up in Santa Barbara, which is about an hour north of L.A., and very different, very beachy. I moved to L.A. when I was 17. I started working with a producer, who put me under his wing and helped me. I've been in L.A. for about seven years.
ELLEgirl: When does the album come out?
Katy: The middle of June. It's colorful and has lots of images and stories, I feel like a lot of girls can related to the lyrics.
ELLEgirl: What female acts inspire you?
Katy: I just saw the Ting Tings play this morning, they're amazing. I like Alanis Morrissette, always been a big fan. Fiona Apple. I like Hayley from Paramore, she's so cute and has an amazing voice.
ELLEgirl: They're here. What other bands are you going to see?
Katy: I haven't looked at the whole schedule. Juggling everything with SXSW is crazy. A lot of my friends are in bands, like Schwayze, The Daylights, Jessie Baylin. I'm like A.D.D., it's so overstimulating here!
